Pets are actually an extension of our family. As a matter of fact a recent survey found that Americans are particularly lenient when it comes to pets, and the most likely to treat them as members of the family. Many of us bring them together of family trips when the right opportunity presents itself. However if you do consider your pets as family – and we bet your do- then you should know that there a few requirements to keep everyone safe and happy.

According to another survey sponsored by AAA and Kurgo Pet Products, 29 percent of respondents admit to being distracted by their dog while driving. However, at least 65 percent have participated in at least one distracting behavior while driving with their dogs. This is an indications that pet owners are not so much aware about the rules or the proper safety measures when driving with their pats.  In addition only 16 percent of the survey respondents use any form of pet restraint system when driving with their dog.

Traveling with our pets can be fanny, even beneficial for you and your pets. Here are a few suggestions to take under consideration when traveling with your pet friends.

Keep Them Indoors

Don’t place your pets in the back of a track bed.  Try to keep your pet on the pack seat not the passenger side. This way your animal will remain safe inside the confines of your car and you can drive fully concentrate on the road.

Use Safety Restraints

As we have seen only 16 percent of dog owners is using a pet restrain. This is however absolutely necessary for airline travel. It may be a good idea to invest in a carrier or a crate that has the proper safety and comfort features.  Keep in mind that there are precise airline requirements when traveling with pets and rules about pets and international travel regarding leaving or entering the country. It is always a good rule of thumb to check out the airport’s parking facilities so you will know if you really need a trolley en route to the baggage check in counters.

Consider Pet’s  Health

It is generally recommended to feed your pets regular food at least a couple of hours prior to a trip. Sometimes their digestive system may upset. Don’t forget their favorite treats and  toys.

The right paperwork is important as is passport for humans, especially during international air travel. These papers are very important in case of a medical emergency. In addition some owners have their pets micro chipped to take care of any concern related to their pet.

Traveling with our pets can be a great adventure and beneficial for every member of the family. One last thing before embarking to a pet friendly trip is to check for a pet friendly hotel in your destination.
