Are you looking for a place to spend your summer vacation? If you do, congratulations! You have finally found it. New Caledonia is a French territory which comprises dozens of islands in the South Pacific, or, in other words, New Caledonia is a paradise you have to visit as soon as possible. It offers a taste of the tropics mixed with the French culture, which together make this place irresistible. Let’s see what New Caledonia has to offer.
What to see in New Caledonia?
Wherever you look, you will only see the beauty. Protected Blue River Park is just the confirmation of the previous statement. It is a reserve for various bird species endemic to the forests of New Caledonia, including the cagou. No matter whether you’re a nature fan or not, the flora and fauna in the Blue River Park will leave you speechless.
The Heart of Voh is another must-see. This is the name for a perfectly shaped heart formed in a mangrove swamp, the landmark of New Caledonia, which can be best seen from the air.
On the other hand, for those, who are more interested in architecture or history, we would recommend visiting the wonderful Noumea Cathedral and the Kanak Monument. Aside from them, the Museum of New Caledonia is also one more option to spend a beautiful afternoon.
However, if you have children, the perfect place for you is certainly Aquarium des Lagons. Here not only will the children have fun, but also learn something new and discover the ocean.
What to do in New Caledonia?
There are many interesting activities you can try and one of them is snorkeling at Grande Terre. This island is surrounded by the second biggest reef in the world, whose colorful sea life is definitely worth seeing.
However, if you are not a fan of snorkeling, we recommend cruising. You should pick one of the New Caledonia packages that allow you to visit some of the surrounding islands, like the Isle of Pines, Mare Island, Lifou Island and many others. Thus, by getting a bit of everything, you will experience the ultimate New Caledonia atmosphere which you will never forget.
On the other hand, if you prefer a relaxing vacation, New Caledonia has something for you, too. You can just lean back and do nothing on some of the numerous sandy beaches, such as Anse Vata Beach, Magenta Beach, Kuendu Beach etc.
If you’re a party animal, you will be absolutely delighted with New Caledonia nightlife. There are plenty of discos and a few casinos situated in the Anse Vata and the Baie des Citrons areas. In these discos you can hear the music which represents the mixture of Pacific and international rhythms.
What and where to eat?
You cannot get the full experience of New Caledonia, unless you taste its traditional cuisine which is considered to be among the best in the South Pacific. Since New Caledonia was claimed by the French in 19th century, it is not a surprise that much of the food in New Caledonia is based on French cooking.
One of the most famous traditional dishes is Bougna dish, a feast dish of the Kanak people. It often contains yam, sweet potatoes, bananas and pieces of either chicken, fish, crab or some other meat. The contents are cooked wrapped in banana leaves.
When it comes to restaurants the choice is abundant, especially in the capital city Noumea, which has a rich offer of elegant restaurants. There you can order anything, from traditional dishes, to something from an international cuisine. Seafood is a specialty so it would be a shame not to try it.
We bet you have already started packing. And if you haven’t, then, it’s high time you did. Whatever you choose to visit, and whichever activity you try, one is certain, you will fall head over heels in love with New Caledonia, wishing that you never have to leave.
